Wednesday 1st March – Walks ***** Sierra de Gata – sunny and warm:)

Our last night on our beach just outside Mojacar another glorious sunrise with next to nobody about today as locals all back at work. Exercises and breakfast outside in the warm sunshine, another 20+ degree day with wall to wall sunshine! Apparently, this area has a microclimate and is called the warm coast:) We headed down the coast and were soon in the Parque Natural de Cabo and the scenery is stunning, the coast road is amazing as it winds its way up to a Coll then down into Carboneras. The only thing marring the vista was the started and abandoned apartments and the cement works but I suppose the locals have to work somewhere. We passed yet another large group of team cyclists in winter training with their support car. Nothing took our fancy here so we continued toward Agua Amarga and saw a carpark with a path leading down to an isolated beach (Muerto – meaning death apparently!) with a rock column at one end. The car park is pay in season but free at the moment. We pulled in and walked first to the viewing area to get a great look at the beach (as long as you looked right and not left towards the cement factory and docks!) It was then down to the beautiful beach made up of tiny pebbles with only a handful of people here:) Getting some nice pics of the beautiful rock and beach was challenging if the smoky chimney and docks were to be removed! We saw yet more Black wheatear birds with their white bums on the way back.
First walk of the day over we passed through Agua Amarga, and soon found a great shortcut to Las Negras (it is a dead end on our map!) through flowery open planes with herds of goats and coastal mountains. It was getting close to lunch so we stopped at Las Negras and found a carpark overlooking the beach and small town made up of low white buildings. There were boats in the bay and it is surrounded again by big hills and the colour of the sea is fantastic. We think there is a bit of a Hippy community here as there were several old campervans and dirty looking blokes with dreadlocks. When we went for a walk on the beach to look at yet another film crew filming two girls in canoes and snorkelling there was right group of down and outs loading a huge amount of tinned lager into a small boat – we didn’t fancy exploring here although there were interesting walking routes out both sides of the town we decided to move on.
Only a few miles down the road we saw a sign to a Playa El Playazo which is now in the Parque Cabo Gata Nijar but sadly with a no overnight campervan sign. We turned in to check it out. It was a beautiful valley to yet another stunning beach with a fort, palm trees and a couple of brightly coloured Hoopoes - the first of the holiday:) Reaching the beach we found a dozen big campers already here with several horse boxes with a group of horse riders having fun on the beach:) All the best spots were taken by the white elephants who looked like they were going to ignore the ban sign so we found a nice level spot a bit higher and had a cuppa watching the horses being put in their boxes!
We were right by the road leading to another small fort right by the sea so we walked the short distance there and saw several naked bodies making me feel right at home:) The fort is someone’s home and is surrounded by pretty red and orange flowers with the sandy coloured rocks behind forming incredible shapes just amazing:) It was only 3.30 when we got back to the van and the weather still stunning, light winds sunny and warm so we took our books with the mat to the middle of the bay and had nearly the whole beach to ourselves, shame the water isn’t warmer as it’s so invitingly clear. Then at five Mag decides let’s walk to the coll up the hill to the right of the bay - we thought there was a footpath. We walked along the beach then started the climb over several rock tiers with the ground covered in loose rocks from top to bottom (they used to dig up cobble stones here). There are many lovely flowers all in bloom. At the coll we actually found the proper foot path which leads down to another Playa a couple of kilometres away but the sun had gone from that route so we decided to scramble up to the top of the highest hill overlooking the bay. Now this turned out to be a scramble to find the best way up but it was worth the hard work as the view from the top was incredible:) Then all we had to do was get down safely treading carefully over the loose rocks. A few of the campers had gone but the others had their satellite dishes up and were staying the night, what rebels! Mag opened a tin of sausages and lentils while I walked up to take a picture of the beach sign board so we knew where we were! Then the local Police arrived in their 4x4! That made us all nervous for a few minutes but they seemed to be looking for something and after several minutes on their mobile phones scanning the beach they left. Let’s hope they don’t come back later and fine us all!!! So, another top day and we are loving the Andalucía - Costa del Sol :)
